Overview

According to the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel, 2.5 million patients per year develop a pressure injury, and of those, 60,000 patients die as a direct result of their pressure injuries. Pressure injuries are one the five most common harms patients experience.

This webinar will discuss skin integrity and pressure injury prevention and management, monitoring, and documentation while also identifying the factors that lead to litigation and strategies for defending against potential claims.

At the end of the webinar, the participant should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the eight elements of pressure injury management.
  2. Recognize factors leading to skin integrity litigation and legal care practices.
  3. Discuss how implicit bias can influence pressure injury prevention and treatment decisions.

Sandra Higelin, MSN, RN, CWCN, CLNC

Sandra Higelin is the owner of N.I.A. LLC offering nurse consulting services.  As a Geriatric Clinical Nurse Specialist, a Certified Wound Care Nurse, and a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, she offers geriatric health care consultations, wound care consultations, patient advocacy services, and education programs in wound care and geriatric issues.  She also works as an expert witness in elder abuse litigation.

Sandra is an active member of the Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Association, Association for the Advancement of Wound Care, and the National Association of Certified Legal Nurse Consultants.   As a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, Sandra provides expert witness services to both plaintiff and defense attorneys across the nation.  She has vast experience in wound care prevention and management and is an experienced speaker, having given presentations on multiple wound care topics.  She is also the author of the Nursing Diagnosis ‘Adult Failure to Thrive’,  authored chapter 18, ‘Pressure Ulcers,’ in the  “Gerontological Nursing Competencies For Care” 4th Edition, 2018, and co-authored  “Evaluating Forensic Cases in the Legal Nurse Consulting Principles” 4th Edition, 2020.
