Unintentionally retained foreign objects (URFO) can result in serious patient harm and unnecessary costs to healthcare systems. Although called “never events”, URFOs remain one of the most frequently reported sentinel events. This presentation will discuss the results of three studies describing 700 events of URFOs reported to The Joint Commission. Targeted strategies for prevention of retained sponges, retained guidewires, and other retained items will be provided.
At the end of the webinar, the participant should be able to:
1. Review findings from 3 unintentionally retained foreign objects (URFOs) studies
2. Discuss challenges to URFO prevention.
3. Describe targeted strategies to reduce URFOs.
